This project is a great example of why wardrobe wrapping in Cambridge and furniture wrapping in Cambridge has become such a popular alternative to full replacement, especially in Cambridge homes with awkward spaces and sloped ceilings.

The original wardrobes in this property were around 20 years old. Structurally, they were fine, but visually they had seen better days. The laminate had started to fail, the finish felt dated, and the detailed groove around each door made them tricky to refresh using traditional methods.

To make things more complicated, the wardrobes ran under a sloped ceiling. The client had already explored replacement and had quotes coming back at £15,000+ for fully bespoke wardrobes built to suit the space.

That’s where architectural vinyl wrapping came in.

The Starting Point

The existing wardrobes had a few key issues:

  • Failed laminate that was peeling in places

  • Decorative grooves around each door

  • A sloped ceiling that ruled out off-the-shelf units

  • A layout that worked well but looked tired

Replacing everything would have meant ripping it all out and starting again. Instead, we focused on keeping what worked and upgrading what didn’t.

A Smarter Approach: Wrap Instead of Replace

Working alongside a carpenter friend of mine, Sam Kleen, we took a hybrid approach to get the best result.

The existing wardrobes were kept in place, and new additional wardrobes were built in MDF to extend the storage and follow the line of the sloping ceiling. Once the joinery was complete, everything was wrapped so it all tied together as one seamless run.

This approach gave the client a fully bespoke look, without the bespoke price tag.

Preparation: The Most Important Part of Wardrobe Wrapping

Because the original laminate had failed, prep was absolutely key on this job. This is the part that most people don’t see, but it’s what makes the difference between a wrap that lasts and one that fails.

The process looked like this:

  • Full sanding back of all surfaces to remove loose laminate and key the substrate

  • Sealing everything with Zinsser to stabilise the surface

  • Sanding again to achieve a smooth, consistent base

  • A second seal coat for durability

  • Additional priming around edges and within the detailed grooves

It’s time-consuming, but it’s non-negotiable if you want a high-quality, long-lasting finish.

The Vinyl Choice: LX Hausys White Wood

For the wrap itself, we used an LX Hausys white wood architectural film.

It’s a premium interior film with a subtle wood grain texture, which gives the wardrobes a painted-wood look rather than a flat, lifeless white. It suits this kind of space perfectly and works especially well in bedrooms where you want something calm and timeless.

One of the biggest challenges on this job was the detailed groove around each door.

Rather than overstretching the vinyl into the recess, the film was carefully fed into the groove. This avoids stress in the material and massively reduces the risk of shrink-back or edge failure over time.

It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference to longevity.

The End Result

The transformation completely changed how the space feels.

What was once a dated, tired set of wardrobes now looks like a brand-new, bespoke installation:

  • Clean, modern white wood finish

  • Seamless fit under the sloped ceiling

  • Consistent finish across old and new units

  • A luxury look without major building work

Most importantly, it achieved the same visual result as a full replacement for a fraction of the cost.
